Germans like their engines to stay on the straight and narrow

Just so long as they aren’t pretty. all joking aside, I’m excited about a new I6 back in the market. I was afraid they were on their way out for good.

I think Merc looked down at their V6 engine compartments and thought “What can we do with these extra 2 feet of empty space at the front?”

Finally - Mercedes will get back the quick throttle response and less complex engines they used to be known for.

...wait that’s not right...

Germans don’t do simple, thats a given, but it could be a very responsive engine.

Now if BMW will make a N/A I6 instead of all turbo sixes...

from a romance standpoint I wish this as well, but given the weight/displacement issues of I6, turbo is the smart choice.

Why did we lose I6s? Packaging I’m guessing?

Put that power train in an M235i competitor and all the money is yours, Mercedes

More than a rumour.

Interestingly Merc have up on straight sixes for safety and money reasons. A shorter engine (V6 in this case) allows for deformable space without having to extend the front of the car. Why they’re going straight again now, I’ve no idea.

easier to turbo? I honestly have no clue.

NVH maybe? Here’s a Jalopnik article from this year discussing the battery powered turbos: http://jalopnik.com/looks-like-mer…

NVH is pretty great with I6, but most customers wouldn’t notice a big difference from the heavily isolated V6’s today.
